The Olympic Colts Cricket Club is a family orientated, community club based in Heidelberg that is home to the Olympic Fillies Women’s Cricket Team.
Women’s Cricket at Olympic Colts CC…
When we heard the NMCA were planning to start a Women’s Competition, we wanted in. We knew that women’s sport was growing and saw this as an amazing opportunity to engage more members of our community in the game we love. We already had plenty of women around the club on game days watching and supporting our men’s teams – when we asked them if they’d like to play, they jumped at the opportunity! The best part was that NONE of them had ever played before.
The enthusiasm was amazing from the very first training session, there were some training nights where our women outnumbered the men, that says something! The motivation and willingness to learn, listen to the coach and ask for help and tips never wavered and any knowledge that was given to each of the girls was taken on board. Every player who put on a Fillies shirt improved and leaps and bounds each week. Making the grand final in the first season was a massive achievement and the girls showed themselves that the hard work pays off and to almost taste the ultimate team success has only made everyone more determined to come back next season and push to go one better.
We are incredibly proud that from the outset, the support from our whole club was outstanding. We had men who usually play making sandwiches, running the canteen and supporting at every game, and our social functions increased in size and enjoyment through the involvement of all of our men’s and women’s players.
The best thing to happen to our club was getting a women’s cricket side. The overall morale of the club was boosted and feeling around the club was a very positive one. We have grown significantly over the last few years and have become a much more family orientated club. Our aim is to build the club further with as many junior and women’s sides as possible and we recognise that providing women with an opportunity to play cricket has given them more ownership and a sense of community and family at Olympic Colts CC.
We are always looking for new players and have a welcoming and open attitude to anyone who wants to join the Olympic Colts/Fillies family.
